* Medal "In memory of Emperor Nicholas I for former students of military educational institutions" was established on October 29, 1896. The medal was awarded to former students of military educational institutions who were studying there on the day of the death of Emperor Nicholas I (cadets of the cadet corps, the Mikhailovsky Artillery and Nikolaevsky Engineering Schools, the School of Guards Ensigns and Cavalry Junkers, and the Medical and Surgical Academy). By the decrees of Emperor Nicholas II of June 13, August 11, 1897, and February 25, 1898, former students of the Institute of Railway Engineers, the Institute of Mining Engineers, and the Konstantinovsky Land Surveying Institute were granted the right to wear the medal. 4 000 medals were minted by St. Petersburg Mint between 1896 and 1897. Inscription on the back reads: “To the pupils of the VUZ in memory of the Unforgettable Benefactor/Воспитанникам В.У.З. в память о Незабвенном Благодетеле.” Medal was worn only on the uniform and vice-uniform, on the chest to the left of all Russian crosses and previously awarded medals, but before the medal for the Central Asian campaigns and expeditions.
