Regiment was established on April 18, 1936, as the China Garrison Artillery Regiment, and on June 21, 1938, when the units of the China Garrison Army were reorganized to form the 27th Division it was renamed the 27th Mountain Artillery Regiment. In the early stages of the Sino-Japanese War, this unit was the only one equipped with the state-of-the-art Type 96 150 mm howitzer, posing a significant threat to the Chinese army.​
