Original name of the badge 鉄道司法警察職員の徽章 - Railroad Judicial Police Officer Badge.
It was worn on the left side of uniform jacket between the 2nd and 3rd buttons.
2nd type was introduced on June 4, 1949.
Badges of 2nd type with gilded train wheel were intended for the judicial police officers/司法警察員の職務を行ろ者.
Badges of 2nd type with silvered train wheel were intended for those who perform the duties of the judicial police/司法警察の職務を行ろ者.
So who were these "judicial police officers"?
"Executives of Japanese national railways, stationmasters, station assistants, train conductors and Japanese national railways staff responsible for maintaining public order or preventing luggage accidents"/"日本国有鉄道の役員、駅長、駅の助役及び車掌区の長並びに日本国有鉄道の職員で旅客公衆の秩序維持又は荷物事故防止の事務を担当するもの".
Badges become obsolete with privatization of JNR /Japanese National Railways/ in 1987.
