Badges could be made in three metals: gold, silver or gilded bronze. These commercially manufactured badges were originally intended for fundraising. Proceeds from sales of these badges were to be used to fund the relief of wounded soldiers in France and other Antanta counties. Since official French wound badge was introduced only on December 11, 1916 these badges sometimes were used in France as unofficial wound badges.
